Wellness is defined as “the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.” Achieving wellness in our everyday lives can be a challenge, so it’s sometimes even more difficult to achieve wellness in our professional lives. The meetings and events industry has seen a push to focus on wellness at events and here are a few ways to accomplish that goal in the Mountain West. With Steamboat Springs as the perfect background, it has never been easier to complete these wellness activities.

1. Biking

The same mountainous terrain that makes areas like Steamboat Springs so ideal for winter skiing doubles as a perfect landscape for biking in the warmer months.

Steamboat Springs, also known as Biketown USA, offers trails suited for bikers of any experience level. From paved relaxing cruises along the Yampa River, to cross country tracks through mountain landscapes, to downhill trails on Mt. Werner, there is a bike path for everyone to get outside and find a healthy state of mind and body.

Just outside of downtown Steamboat, Emerald Mountain hosts many miles of single-track trails and proudly offers the best cross-country mountain biking in the state of Colorado, while the Steamboat Bike Park, located on Mt. Werner, is just steps away from the local Sheraton Steamboat Resort.

Bonus: Many of the hotel properties, like the Sheraton Steamboat Resort, will offer a complimentary bike valet so guests don’t have to worry about the safety and storage of their bicycles during their stay.

2. Hiking

If exploring the area on wheels is not your group’s taste, scenic gondola rides up Mt. Werner lead to additional trails more focused on hiking. Stop to smell the wildflowers in other areas too like Pearl Lake at the foot of Farwell Mountain or Fish Creek Falls.

There are more than 80 trails maintained on U.S. Forest Service land in Steamboat Springs, all offering striking views of the Rocky Mountains, the chance to see local wildlife, or a way to explore Steamboat Ski Resort without cold temperatures and skis underfoot.

Bonus: These types of activities not only promote wellness and physical activity, but they allow visitors a chance to experience the region in a whole new way.

3. Hot Springs

There are very few things as calming as relaxing in water and that can be done in a variety of ways in the Mountain West. Steamboat Springs, which was actually named for these bubbling water works, is sprinkled with a total of 150 geothermal hot springs. Regarded as relaxing and healing for the mind, body and soul, hot springs are a great way to wind down after a productive work day, or one filled with physical activity. Strawberry Park Hot Springs and Old Town Hot Springs are a few of the best places to soak up the surrounding natural landscape.

Bonus: Destinations like Strawberry Park offer additional services such as private massages in authentic Colorado huts and watsu therapy in a private pool, for those that want to enhance the hot spring experience.

4. Water Sports

For water activities with a little bit more movement, there is always tubing and kayaking down the Yampa River. Tubing allows visitors to experience a unique view of downtown Steamboat while leisurely floating for one to three hours. Local tubing outfitters are available to help with all your tubing needs and questions including Bucking Rainbow Outfitters, Backdoor Sports Ltd. of Steamboat, and One Stop Ski Shop.

Kayaking and paddle boarding are great options for attendees looking for a little more action and physical activity. Paddle boarding is available on the Yampa River for adrenaline junkies, but for those new to SUP, Steamboat Lake and Stagecoach State Park are great locations to test the waters.

Bonus: Guests can even hop out of the river and make stops along the way at parks, restaurants and bars, making the experience last a little bit longer.

5. Yoga

There’s no better way to promote the wellness of both body and mind than through yoga. Yoga has proven to reduce stress, calm the mind, promote positive thinking, sharpen attention and lower blood pressure.

The Rocky Mountain Day Spa, found in the Sheraton Steamboat Resort, can facilitate private yoga classes so groups can achieve inner peace without distractions from strangers.

Yoga classes can either be taken in the beginning of the trip so guests can clear their minds before the work begins and set clear goals they want to accomplish, or after the work is done so the class can act as a perfect place to reflect on what was achieved and what still lies ahead.

Bonus: Guests can enjoy other spa services, such as massages, nail services and facials, after yoga class to further stimulate their wellness practices and continue to improve their mind and bodies.
